The NFL’s gambling policy was updated once again in the 2024 offseason, marking some changes for this year. These rules affect athletes competing in the NFL, restricting their ability to participate in some forms of betting. NFL Gambling Policy

The NFL’s comprehensive gambling policy goes into detail over what is allowable for NFL players and personnel to bet on. In addition to mandatory training focused on gambling education for athletes and coaches, there are seven key points to the NFL’s gambling policy. There are as follows:

  • Never Bet on the NFL. (includes preseason, regular season, and postseason games, the NFL Draft, Scouting Combine, & season awards)
  • People Can’t Bet for You. (Circumventing the first rule by asking a family member or friend to place a bet for them is strictly prohibited)
  • Don’t Gamble on Location. (No gambling of any kind, including card games, in the team’s stadium, facilities, transportation methods, or while visiting other stadiums)
  • Don’t Share Inside Info. (Under no circumstances can a member of the NFL share information that has not yet been announced by the team or league)
  • Don’t Use Sportsbooks Midseason. (During the NFL season, NFL players cannot enter any physical or online sportsbooks for any reason, even if no bets are placed)
  • Don’t Play Fantasy Football. (Do not play any type of fantasy football)
  • FOR COACHES/STAFF ONLY: No Sports Betting of Any Kind. (No betting on any sports at any time for any reason)

How it Affects You

The NFL’s gambling policy has some strict limitations that affects athletes participating in games. Fortunately, this policy has almost no effect on the average bettor. As long as you’re not placing a bet for someone else or employed by the NFL, you won’t be breaking any rules. On the other hand, sports betting is still restricted in some states and territories.
