NL K Leader Gore Faces Down the Mets
While the Nationals are seemingly not yet ready to contend for a playoff spot, they are showing significant improvement on the field and in the standings. At 30-35, they have gone 29-29 since losing six of seven to start the season. They continue to have holes and will need to bring in some proven veterans to take the next step, but there is a solid foundation in place, led in part by lefty Mackenzie Gore.
Gore is leading the NL in strikeouts with 108 in 75.1 innings. He has a 2.6 bWAR, has allowed 64 hits, and has significantly improved his command from previous years. His ERA is 2.87, and he’s given up 24 earned runs.
Against Gore, the Mets’ Jeff McNeil is 7 for 10 with 2 walks. Pete Alonso is 2 for 15 with a home run. Francisco Lindor is 2 for 14 with 2 singles. Juan Soto is 2 for 9. Tyrone Taylor is 1 for 9 with a home run.
Washington left fielder James Wood is already a star at 22. He has a 2.4 bWAR, 16 homers, and an .899 OPS. Still, apart from CJ Abrams (.783 OPS, 8 homers, 11 stolen bases), the Nats need to boost their offense, particularly in the power department, if they’re going to take the next step.
Canning Hopes to Keep Mets’ Run Going
Griffin Canning had an excellent start against the Dodgers in his last outing, tossing 6 shutout innings, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 7. It was a rebound after a poor start against the White Sox.
He has been one of the biggest surprises of the season with a 2.90 ERA in 59 innings. He’s given up 52 hits and struck out 57. His control has eluded him at times, with 26 walks.
For the Nationals, Nathaniel Lowe is 3 for 15 against Canning with 2 home runs. Wood is 2 for 5 with a double and a home run. Alex Call is 3 for 8. Kelbert Ruiz is 3 for 7 with 3 singles.
The Mets’ Pete Alonso has started another hot streak after slowing down slightly from his searing start. He leads the majors with 61 RBIs and leads the NL with 20 doubles. He has 17 homers and a .990 OPS.
New York has won 11 of 14 to re-take first place from the staggering Phillies. They are 11.5 games in front of the Nats and a whopping 14 games ahead of the imploding Braves.
Nationals vs Mets Pick: Gore Will Cool the Mets for a Day
Although the teams are on different ends of the spectrum, the Nats have a pitching advantage for this game, regardless of how effective Canning has been. Gore is on the verge of being mentioned in the top five or six pitchers in baseball and will handle the Mets to get the Nats the win.
